Xilinx (Xilinx) recently announced that third-party test results of its 32-bit MicroBlaze processor platform show that Xilinx FPGA embedded processor solutions maintain a leading position in real-time design applications. According to reports, the test chose to run Accelerated Technology's Nucleus RTOS on a relatively conservative 100Mhz MicroBlaze Virtex-II Pro FPGA system. Throughout the testing process, the MicroBlaze processor platform maintained high performance.

Test results show that the MicroBlaze processor's interrupt latency is more than an order of magnitude ahead of competing soft processor solutions. Additionally, the MicroBlaze platform's fast task-switching operational capabilities also allow for faster execution of routines or tasks waiting for service.

Rich Sevcik, executive vice president of Xilinx, said the performance advantage of Xilinx's solution comes from the combination of its soft-core and hard-core RISC processors with industry-standard tools such as Nucleus RTOS.

The MicroBlaze soft core is a standard 32-bit RISC processor optimized for Xilinx FPGA devices. A basic design using a traditional single-processor approach can deliver 125 Dhrystone MIPS (DMIPS) performance with a Virtex-II Pro FPGA at a clock frequency of 150 MHz, or 85 Dhrystone MIPS (DMIPS) with a cost-optimized Spartan-3 FPGA. Provides 68 Dhrystone MIPS (DMIPS) performance at a clock frequency of MHz.

For higher performance requirements, Xilinx embedded a 32-bit PowerPC core in the Virtex-II series platform FPGA to provide DMIPS performance. Combined with the Virtex-II Pro FPGA's 32-bit PowerPC core at a clock frequency of 450 MHz, it provides over 680 DMIPS of performance. Because the processor simplifies the design, the die area used is also very small. For example, an efficient design uses less than 2% of the die area in a Xilinx 2VP50 device.
