Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX), the world's leading provider of programmable logic solutions and inventor of the FPGA, today released details of its fourth-generation rtex® product, the Virtex-4® platform FPGA . Using the revolutionary ASMBL™ (Advanced Silicon Modular Block) architecture, the Virtex-4 product line is the world's first FPGA family to include multiple domain-specific platforms, delivering breakthrough FPGA performance and Function. The original Virtex-4 family consists of three platforms: Virtex-4 LX for logic applications, Virtex-4 SX for ultra-high performance signal processing, and Virtex-4 FX for embedded processing and high-speed serial connectivity. Each platform will provide a series of devices to choose from. The Virtex-4 family of devices has densities of up to 200,000 logic cells and performance up to 500 MHz; twice the density and performance of devices currently being produced by other manufacturers in the industry.

Based on the great success of Xilinx's Virtex family and Xilinx's one-year leadership in 90nm process technology, the Virtex-4 family is set to surpass the $5.1 billion programmable logic market from $36 billion in value gain more share in the ASIC and ASSP market (market data source: Gartner Dataquest 2007 Projection FPGA/CPLD Market). For system designers in the high-growth technology fields of wired and wireless communications, storage and multimedia, cost-effective FPGAs will now be available in applications previously limited to ASICs and ASSPs.

One Series - Multiple Platforms

The Virtex-4 family is the first concrete embodiment of the revolutionary ASMBL architecture. The design method based on the ASMBL architecture enables Xilinx to quickly and economically build multiple domain-specific device platforms with optimized feature combinations. This multi-platform approach allows designers to choose the FPGA platform with the right combination of features for their application, allowing logic fabric, block memory, clock management, and features such as XtremeDSP™ slices to work together perfectly to support record-breaking 500MHz clocks speed. Taking advantage of advanced 90nm process technology and innovative ASBML architecture, this family of devices has an unparalleled logic capacity of 200,000 logic cells.

Introduction to the Virtex-4 family

The Virtex-4 LX, SX and FX platforms each offer a different combination of core capabilities. An optimized combination of logic, memory, parallel and serial I/O, embedded processors, high-performance DSP functions, enhanced clock management, hard IP, mixed-signal, and other functional blocks makes them perfectly suited to domain-specific application requirements.

The Virtex-4 LX platform FPGA is aimed at general-purpose logic applications, providing the highest logic density and cost-effective high-performance logic and I/O. Devices in this family provide a rich logic cell, along with embedded block RAM, digital clock management (DCM) blocks, and XtremeDSP/arithmetic functions, suitable for processing high-density, I/O-intensive, and high-performance logic in a variety of markets application. The Virtex-4 LX programmable device redefines the FPGA price-performance ratio and is the industry's most cost-effective FPGA product ever.

The Virtex-4 SX platform FPGA is targeted at high-performance signal processing applications such as wireless communications, video, multimedia and advanced audio. Devices in this family provide all the capabilities of LX platform devices while providing a very high percentage of XtremeDSP slices and embedded block RAM resources for very high performance real-time signal processing. The Virtex-4 SX programmable device has the highest XtremeDSP slice-to-logic resource ratio and the highest embedded block RAM-to-logic resource ratio, thus delivering a breakthrough DSP at significantly reduced power compared to other FPGA solutions performance. In addition, 500 MHz XtremeDSP slices can be cascaded and operated at full speed.

The Virtex-4 FX platform FPGA is primarily optimized for complex system applications, especially high-speed serial connections and embedded processing in networking, storage, telecom and embedded applications. Devices in this family offer the industry's first gigabit-class serial transceivers supporting any speed between 600 Mbps and 11.1 Gbps, and an enhanced embedded PowerPC 405 processor with a hardware-accelerated auxiliary processor unit. In addition, rich logic cells, block RAM, DCM clock manager and DSP/arithmetic functions are provided. By providing the built-in functionality required for complete system integration, Virtex-4 FX programmable devices provide the most advanced platform FPGA devices for system design.

Introduction to ASMBL Architecture

The new ASMBL architecture is a device subsystem modular framework. This architecture enables Xilinx to quickly and economically introduce FPGA platform products for different application areas. In each field there are multiple applications with common requirements such as extremely high-performance signal processing, embedded processing and high-speed connectivity. Therefore, customers can choose a platform FPGA device with an optimized combination of functions and features suitable for a specific design. The ASMBL architecture takes advantage of advanced flip-chip packaging technology and avoids the geometric layout constraints associated with traditional chip designs, such as the hard correlation between the number of I/Os and the size of the device construction array. The ASMBL architecture also addresses the increasingly demanding requirements for on-chip power and ground signaling by allowing power and ground to be placed anywhere on the chip.
