This is an optoelectronic The coupler is ideal for driving power in variable frequency applications using IGBTs and MOSFETs for motor control. The output stage at a high operating voltage pro-ranges the drive voltage required by the gating device. This voltage and current are supplied to this optocoupler characteristics, ideal for direct drive IGBTs with ratings up to 1200 V/100 A. For higher ratings of IGBTs, the HCPL-3120 can be used to drive the gate of the discrete power stage which drives the IGBT.

Application Information

Eliminating the negative IGBT gate driver to keep the IGBT firmly off, the HCPL-3120 has an extremely low maximum VOL of 0.5 V. The HCPL-3120 achieves this very low VOL by using a DMOS transistor of 1? (typ) at Its pull-down resistor step-down circuit. When the HCPL-3120 is in the low state, the IGBT gate is shorted to the emitter RG + 1?. Minimize Rg and the lead inductance from the HCPL-3120 to the IGBT gate and emitter (possibly by mounting on a small PC The HCPL-3120 IGBT on the board) can save the negative IGBT gate driver system in many applications, as shown in the figure below. Care should be taken such a PC board design to avoid routing the collector and emitter of the IGBT. Traces close to the input of the HCPL-3120 are transient signals which may result in unwanted coupling into the HCPL-3120 and degradation of properties.
