NX20P0477 USB Type-C CC with Smart Protection

Image of NXP's NX20P0477 USB Type-C CC with Smart Protection NXP's NX20P0477 is a single-chip USB Type-C (USB-C) port overvoltage protection solution that integrates moisture and corrosion-resistant algorithms. The CC1 and CC2 pins on the system side are protected against a 28 V short to V BUS.
USB-C allows the V BUS voltage to be increased up to 20V via the power delivery protocol. Due to the mechanical twisting and sliding of the connector, the CC1 and CC2 pins can be shorted to V BUS because the contact pins of the USB-C connector are 25% closer to each other than the micro USB connector. Moisture or fine dust can also cause the 20 VV BUS pin to short to adjacent pins.
The NX20P0477 makes the CC pin more robust even under abnormal conditions. The NX20P0477 can withstand 28 V DC on the CON_CC pin on the connector side, and if the voltage is above the overvoltage threshold, it can quickly turn off the switch, thus protecting the CC pin on the system side from high voltage.
The USB PD standard requires 80 μA, 180 μA or 330 μA as Rp to detect the receiver device, but this Rp current can accelerate the corrosion of the USB-C connector pins when the CC pins are contaminated with water (especially salt water). Additionally, the CC/PD controller can identify this water impedance as a detected sink, providing 5 V through the V BUS pin to accelerate corrosion.
The NX20P0477 converts these USB standard Rp currents from CC/PD controllers to ultra-low current sources to prevent corrosion.
The NX20P0477 integrates +6 kV contact discharge and +8 kV air discharge IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection on CON_CC1 and CON_CC2 to help reduce external BOM cost.
The NX20P0477 is available in 0.5mm pitch, nine bumps and a 1.49mm x 1.49mm x 0.555mm WLCSP package.
