October 21, 2019 – Nordic Semiconductor announces the nRF52833 advanced multiprotocol system-on-chip (SoC), the fifth new member of its popular and proven nRF52 family. The nRF52833 is an ultra-low power Bluetooth® Low Energy (Bluetooth LE), Thread, Zigbee and 2.4 GHz private wireless connectivity solution that includes a Bluetooth 5.1 DF capable radio and can operate from -40 to Effective operation in the temperature range of 105°C. The nRF52833 features a 64 MHz 32-bit Arm® Cortex®-M4 processor with FPU and is ideal for applications including professional lighting, asset tracking, smart home products, due to its large flash (512 KB) and RAM (128 KB) memory. Various commercial and industrial wireless applications including advanced wearables and gaming solutions.

The large-capacity flash memory and RAM memory of the nRF52833 SoC can support dynamic multi-protocol functions, which is an advantage in applications such as professional lighting. When the application can concurrently support Bluetooth low energy and Bluetooth mesh/Thread/Zigbee functions, their configuration, Commissioning as well as interacting with the lighting mesh network can be done from a smartphone using Bluetooth Low Energy. The 105°C operating performance of this SoC device provides a further advantage in professional lighting applications that typically require higher ambient temperatures.

The nRF52833 device radio can support all Bluetooth 5.1 direction finding functions, and the large memory can support both receiver and transmitter in Angle of Arrival (AoA) and Angle of Departure (AoD) applications. The direction finding function enables positioning applications to rely not only on the received signal strength indication (RSSI), but also on the signal direction. Typical applications include real-time positioning systems (RTLS) and indoor positioning systems (IPS).

The nRF52833 device features leading-edge features including full-speed USB, high-speed SPI and +8dBm output power previously only available on Nordic's flagship nRF52840 multi-protocol SoC. The combination of higher output power and the long-range capabilities of Bluetooth 5 technology ensures that the nRF52833 is ideal for smart home applications that require robust connectivity and full building coverage. The SoC device includes up to 42 GPIOs and a range of analog and digital interfaces such as NFC-A tags, ADC, UART/SPI/TWI, PWM, I2S and PDM interfaces. The device features a two-stage LDO regulator and a DC-DC converter with an input supply range of 1.7-5.5 V, allowing the nRF52833 SoC to be powered by a coin cell, rechargeable battery, or on-chip USB.

Compatible with the Arduino Uno Rev3 standard, this development kit can use a compatible Nordic Power Profiler kit and a variety of third-party modules during development.
