Platinum resistance temperature detector (Pt-RTD) chips consist of thin films of platinum deposited on a high-purity alumina substrate. Pt-RTDs offer significant cost advantages in chip form compared to traditional wirewound Pt-RTDs.

Pt-RTDs in chip form can withstand temperatures from -260°C to +1000°C due to the stability of platinum's TCR, OTP protection, highly advanced packaging materials and processing techniques.

The main characteristic of Pt-RTDs is the linear relationship between temperature and resistance value, which is a key characteristic required to be able to measure temperature over a wide operating temperature range. Pt-RTDs will maintain a large resistance range and temperature rate of change over the higher operating temperature range, which is ideal for digital control, while PTCs and NTCs do not offer this performance at high temperatures.
