He pointed out that since Mini LED is still based on the LCD structure, the backlight specification that can be used for direct area dimming has been pushed to the extreme, which is an important upgrade of the existing technology. With TCL taking the lead in launching 65-inch and 75-inch TVs with Mini LED backlights in North America in the fourth quarter of this year, consumers also have a new choice for high-end TVs.

At present, the production cost of high-end edge-lit backlight display modules is about US$350 for 65-inch UHD 4K TVs in terms of different technical costs; display modules using passively driven Mini LED backlights (about 16,000 LEDs) are About US$650~690; as for the Dual Cell TV released by Hisense this year, it is estimated that the cost of its display module is about US$630. Although the production cost of Mini LED TV is still slightly higher, it has begun to become competitive in the market.

TrendForce pointed out that most of the Mini LED backlight TV products mass-produced this year use passive drivers (PM). However, as the amount of LED driver ICs will increase synchronously with the increase in the number of backlight partitions, in addition to the need for relatively large driver boards, production costs will also improve.

On the contrary, the display with active drive (AM) Mini LED backlight can show its advantages when the number of partitions is more. In addition to being more competitive in cost, the specifications can also be comparable to OLED. Active drive products actively developed by panel makers such as Chuang, AUO, BOE and CSOT are expected to be the key to boosting the market share of Mini LED backlights in the high-end TV market.
