NRF5340 high performance application processor

The nRF5340 integrates a high-performance application processor, a fully programmable ultra-low-power network processor, and advanced root of trust and trusted execution security functions in a low-power multi-protocol SoC for professional lighting, industrial automation, Advanced wearables and other complex IoT applications

Nordic Semiconductor has announced the nRF5340TM high-end multiprotocol system-on-chip (SoC), the first member of its next-generation nRF5 family of SoCs. The nRF5340 is built on Nordic's proven and globally adopted nRF51 and nRF52 series of multi-protocol SoCs, while introducing a new flexible dual-processor hardware architecture with advanced security features, including support for Bluetooth 5.1/Bluetooth low energy (Bluetooth? Low Energy /Bluetooth LE), Bluetooth Mesh, Thread and Zigbee and other major RF protocols.

The nRF5340 SoC is designed for extended operating temperature to 105oC while supporting multi-protocol and advanced security features, making it ideal for professional lighting and industrial applications. In addition, this SoC's high-performance application processor with 512 KB RAM large memory can meet the needs of next-generation cutting-edge wearable devices. The device features an extended QSPI peripheral interface capable of interfacing to external memory at 96 MHz, and also integrates a high-speed 32 MHz SPI peripheral that can be used as a display and complex sensor interface.

The nRF5340 integrates ArmTrustZone™'s Arm CryptoCell-312 technology and secure key storage to provide the highest level of security. The device uses Arm CryptoCell-312 for hardware acceleration of the most common Internet encryption standards, while Arm TrustZone provides system-wide hardware isolation for trusted software by creating secure and non-secure code execution zones on a single core. The nRF5340's comprehensive security features enable an advanced root of trust and secure firmware updates while protecting the SoC from malicious attacks.

The nRF5340 is based on an Arm® Cortex®-M33 dual-core processor; one is a high-performance application processor running at up to 128 MHz (510 CoreMark) with dedicated 1 MB Flash and 512 KB RAM; the other is running at 64 MHz (238 CoreMark) fully programmable ultra-low power network processor with dedicated 256 KB flash and 64 KB memory. Highly efficient (65 CoreMark/mA) powerful applications processor with 8 KB of two-channel associative cache, support for DSP and floating point functions, and options for voltage and frequency scaling, the application processor integrates Arm TrustZone's Arm Cryptocell-312 and advanced security features for secure key storage with various interface peripherals including NFC, USB, QSPI and high-speed SPI. The fully programmable network processor is more energy efficient (101 CoreMark/mA) and optimized for low power consumption and low duty cycle sensor acquisition during radio operation. Programmable network processor access provides an optimal implementation of the 2.4 GHz proprietary protocol, ensuring the feasibility of porting from the nRF51 and nRF52 series.

The nRF5340 integrates a new power-optimized multi-protocol 2.4 GHz radio with 3.2 mA TX current (0 dBm TX power, 3 V, DC/DC) and 2.6 mA RX current (3 V, DC/DC). Sleep current as low as 1.1 μA. This SoC features enhanced dynamic multi-protocol support, concurrent support for Bluetooth Low Energy and Bluetooth mesh/Thread/Zigbee operations, configuration/debugging via a Bluetooth Low Energy smartphone, and interaction with mesh networks. This radio has the full capabilities of Bluetooth 5.1 direction finding. The nRF5340 operates from a 1.7 V to 5.5 V supply voltage range, allowing power from rechargeable batteries and USB. The SoC also integrates XTAL load capacitors for 32 MHz and 32.762 kHz crystals, requiring four fewer external components compared to Nordic's nRF52 series, reducing the bill of materials (BOM) and solution size .

The nRF5340's software development kit, the nRF Connect SDK, provides a complete solution that integrates Zephyr RTOS, Bluetooth Low Energy stack, application examples and hardware drivers. The nRF Connect SDK is a reliable solution for developing commercial products based on the nRF9160 SiP. Now with nRF5340 support, this SDK unifies low-power cellular IoT and low-power short-range wireless application development. The nRF Connect SDK is publicly hosted on GitHub, source code managed by Git, and supported by the free SEGGER Embedded Studio IDE. Nordic has also introduced an inexpensive nRF5340 single-board preview development kit, the nRF5340 PDK, which gives developers access to the full capabilities of the nRF5340 and all GPIOs, with an on-board SEGGER J-Link debugger for SoC programming and debugging.

Kjetil Holstad, director of product management at Nordic Semiconductor, said: “Bluetooth, Thread, Zigbee and other low-power wireless technologies now form a key part of the Internet of Things. Future commercial products for highly complex applications such as IoT. These applications require higher computing power and security, but developers expect Nordic’s wireless solutions to remain compact and energy efficient.”

"The nRF5340 SoC is designed to meet these needs and more, and this product is not only the culmination of Nordic's decades of experience in ultra-low power wireless, but also Nordic's experience in developing and supporting the nRF51 and nRF52 series of SoCs over the past seven years, and perhaps even It is the result of several years of dedicated product development by the world's most experienced low-power wireless product development team. Using the nRF5340 in conjunction with the nRF Connect SDK, developers can easily build wireless applications that have not been possible until now."

nRF5340 PDK. Engineering samples of the nRF5340 SoC in a 7x7 mm aQFN package with 48 GPIOs will be available soon.
