China's memory chip industry is expected to produce chips that account for about 5 percent of global output next year, up from almost zero last year, according to people familiar with the matter, Nikkei reported.
The Chinese government, which has made artificial intelligence a strategic priority, has invested billions of dollars in building the semiconductor industry over the past few years. Strengthening China's own hard power has become even more urgent because of the U.S.-China trade war and the U.S. banning China from using certain U.S. technology, such as memory chips that can be used in military and security equipment.
Yangtze Memory, which makes NAND flash memory chips, expects to triple its wafer output to 60,000 a month by the end of next year, accounting for 5% of global output. Meanwhile, Changxin Storage expects the company's DRAM chip production to triple to 40,000 per month by 2020, accounting for 3% of global DRAM production.
Currently, the global output of NAND and DRAM chips is about 1.3 million per each per month. Both markets are dominated by U.S., Korean and Japanese manufacturers such as Samsung, SK Hynix, Micron and Kioxia (formerly Toshiba Memory).
According to industry insiders, NAND and DRAM chips are currently produced on a small scale in China, but the quality is improving. It is expected that by next year, China's memory industry will gradually expand production.
Both YMTC and Changxin Storage declined to comment. YMTC said only that the company had started producing 64-layer NAND flash memory in September and would increase production according to the company’s plans, but did not specify any specific plans.
Sources said that YMTC's NAND flash memory has received orders from some well-known international and domestic companies, such as Lenovo, which plans to use NAND flash memory chips in its computers for domestic sales and exports.
"This is a milestone for China," said a Lite-On Technology executive. "Compared to larger companies such as Samsung, SK Hynix and Kioxia, YMTC's shipments may be insignificant.
