With the approaching of the new Surface hardware launch conference on October 2, related revelations have also begun to become denser. According to a patent issued by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Microsoft plans to implement a unique thermal management scheme in the dual-screen hardware in order to provide good heat dissipation for the whole machine. The patent, titled "Device Configuration-Based Thermal Management Control," was filed in March 2018 and published on September 19.

The special feature of this patent is that it introduces a new cooling technology. It is capable of cooling the first and second part of a Windows dual-screen device. Like other dual-screen devices, the sides of Microsoft's prototype can be rotated relative to each other, but each side is also equipped with separate temperature sensors.

Microsoft said the new solution would allow sensors to continuously, or at intervals, check the temperature of both halves of the device. Even though the shape limited the cooling capacity of the device, they found a solution.

For the first set of sensors, the processor only uses the temperature sensor signal from the computing device side when the device is off. However, the company seems to be cautious about the use of folding technology.

Judging from this patent, Microsoft still hopes to solve the various technical problems it may bring, especially heat dissipation. As for a prototype of the fabled "Centaurus" (Centaurus) Surface dual-screen device, it's still early days.

However, there are a lot of reports that the machine may be equipped with two 9-inch screens. A wild guess is that its form factor may be based on a scaled-down Surface Pro or Surface Go model.

Finally, according to supply chain sources, Microsoft is still on track to release the device in the first half of 2020 if all goes well. As for whether it will be "by the way" at the October 2 press conference, please wait and see.
