As electric vehicles become more popular, another environmental question arises: Who handles the battery?

Batteries have clearly become a problem, according to a paper published today in the journal Nature. We will inevitably need to recycle many batteries, but obtaining useful materials from these lithium-ion batteries is still dangerous. But institutional changes, such as designing batteries with recycling in mind, and the use of robots to automate their disassembly, could reshape battery recycling, the paper's authors say. In 2017, the global electric vehicle sales exceeded one million units. The authors estimate that these cars alone will end up producing 250,000 tons of discarded batteries. But landfill explosions aren't the only reason to avoid throwing away old batteries. In fact, they're useful long after they've been taken out of the car. The money earned from repurposing these batteries even exceeds the cost of recycling.

Linda Gaines is one of the authors of the new paper and a systems analyst at Argonne National Laboratory. Argonne National Laboratory is a research center operated by the University of Chicago and the US Department of Energy.

Gaines and her co-authors saw an opportunity to use materials from older batteries to meet the demand for new types of car batteries. Lithium batteries for electric vehicles are made from cobalt, a mineral mostly mined in Congo. But growing demand for cobalt in the region has led to allegations that mining it creates child labor and other social and environmental problems. Therefore, Gavin Harper, a researcher at the University of Birmingham and lead author of the paper, believes that in some cases, recycling batteries and repurposing these valuable materials into new manufacturing makes more sense than reusing them.

To be able to recycle batteries to the scale required by the growing electric vehicle market, the industry will need to address some key challenges. First, batteries today are not designed for easy removal. Batteries are not all manufactured in a standard way, making automatic removal difficult. A lot of the work needs to be done by hand by people who are skilled enough to avoid hurting themselves in the process.

Utilizing robots could address the risks facing humans, and could make the process fast enough to handle the influx of batteries in the future. "The idea of designing for recycling is something that battery manufacturers should keep in mind," Gaines said. "That kind of thinking needs to go into product manufacturing."
