In the third quarter, STMicroelectronics achieved net revenue of $2.55 billion, gross profit margin of 37.9%, operating profit margin of 13.1%, net profit of $302 million, and diluted earnings per share of $0.34.

Commenting on the third quarter results, STMicroelectronics President and CEO Jean-Marc Chery said:

· "Our third-quarter net revenue increased 17.5% sequentially, above the median forecast of 15.3%, driven by customer relationship initiatives and new product launches in both the automotive and industrial markets. Although as expected , demand in these two traditional markets remains weak.

"The operating profit margin in the third quarter was 13.1%, and while investing in the medium-term development plan, the free cash flow indicator returned to positive.

"Looking at the business outlook for the fourth quarter, net revenue is expected to increase by approximately 5.0% sequentially, or approximately 1.2% year-over-year. Gross margin is expected to be approximately 38.2%, including approximately 120 basis points of idle capacity expense.

"For the full year of 2019, median net revenue is expected to be approximately $9.48 billion, while operating margins remain in the double digits."

Net Revenue: Third-quarter revenue totaled $2.55 billion, up 17.5% sequentially and 220 basis points above the company's median forecast. Net income in the third quarter increased 1.2% year over year compared to the same period last year, with growth in imaging products, analog chips, power discretes and MEMS sales largely driven by growth in digital ICs, automotive chips and microcontrollers. This was offset by a decline in sales. Compared with the same period last year, OEM sales revenue increased by 7.2%, while sales revenue from agency channels decreased by 11.6%.

Gross profit: Totaled $967 million, down 3.6% year over year. Gross margin was 37.9%, down 190 basis points year over year, primarily driven by price pressures and spending on spare capacity. Gross margins in the third quarter were 40 basis points higher than the company's median forecast, mainly due to lower spending on spare capacity. Gross margin for the third quarter included approximately 110 basis points of spare capacity expense.

Operating profit: Totaled $336 million, down 15.6% from $398 million in the same period last year. The company's operating margin fell 270 basis points year over year to 13.1% of net revenue, compared to 15.8% in the third quarter of 2018.

Year-on-year performance of each product segment:

Automotive and Discrete Products Group (ADG)

· Sales of power discrete devices increased, while sales of automotive products decreased.

· Operating profit was $76 million, down 34.5% year over year. Operating profit margin was 8.5%, compared with 12.8% in the same period last year.

Analog Devices, MEMS and Sensor Products Division (AMS)

· Revenue growth in imaging, analog and MEMS products.

· Operating profit of $198 million, an increase of 26.1%. Operating profit margin was 20.5%, compared with 17.5% in the same period last year.

Microcontroller and Digital IC Products Group (MDG)

· Sales of microcontrollers and digital IC products both declined.

· Operating profit was $108 million, down 9.2% year over year. Operating profit margin was 15.7%, compared with 16.6% in the same period last year.

Net income and diluted earnings per share were $302 million and $0.34, respectively, compared with $369 million and $0.41 a year earlier.
