According to Korean media etnews, Samsung Electronics plans to increase the production of foldable mobile phones by more than 10 times this year in 2020. Specifically, Samsung set the top sales target at 6 million units.

Industry insiders pointed out that Samsung is currently studying the supply situation, and Samsung Display is also checking its production capacity in order to test the feasibility of the sales target of 6 million folding screen mobile phones.

To increase production of foldable phones, Samsung also needs to make additional investments in facilities and equipment in Vietnam. If the company continues its Galaxy Fold marketing campaign for some time to come, the launch date of the clamshell-based smartphone (its next foldable model) could be pushed back to early or mid-2020.

"Although the yield of foldable panels is lower than that of OLED, there are no major technical issues as Samsung Display is able to process tens of millions of screens per year," an industry representative noted. Carriers remain cautious about the recent popularity of the Galaxy Fold, as they believe it comes from a limited market and consumers are simply "curious" about the new form factor, the report said.

Many predict that the Galaxy Fold will struggle to establish itself despite mass production if Samsung cannot ensure differentiated usability, competitive pricing and stability.
