The TCA9406 is a 2-bit bidirectional I2C and SMBus voltage level translator with an output enable (OE) input. It operates from 1.65V to 3.6V on the A side with a reference of VCCA and on the B side from 2.3V to 5.5V with a reference of VCCB. Therefore, the device is capable of switching any high or low logic signal level between the typical 1.8V, 2.5V, 3.3V and 5V supply rails.
The OE input pin is referenced to VCCA and can be connected directly to VCCA, but is also 5.5V tolerant. The user also has control over the OE pin, setting it low to keep all SCL and SDA pins in a high impedance state, significantly reducing quiescent current consumption.
In normal I2C and SMBus operating configurations or other open-drain configurations, the TCA9406 can support speeds up to 2Mbps, so it can meet standard I2C speed requirements, ie SCL frequencies of 100kHz (standard mode), 400kHz (fast mode), or 1MHz (Quick mode upgrade). The device can also be used as a general-purpose level translator, and the TCA9406 supports speeds up to 24Mbps when both the A-side and B-side ports are driven by push-pull devices.
The TCA9406 has internal 10kΩ pull-up resistors on SCL_A, SDA_A, SCL_B and SDA_B. You can also add additional pull-up resistors to the bus, reducing the total pull-up resistance and speeding up rising edges
