Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) has announced that it has shipped one million 90nm Spartan-3™ devices, continuing its delivery of the world's first 90nm FPGA family. Working with partner UMC, Xilinx has been leading the PLD industry for at least a year in utilizing the 90nm process for production. Prior to that, Xilinx announced its second 90nm product on September 16, 2004. Line Virtex-4? Multiplatform FPGA family. Using the 90nm process experience gained in Spartan-3 volume production, Xilinx has accelerated the use of mature 90nm technology for the Virtex-4 platform FPGA family.

Xilinx's strategy of aggressively investing and deploying 90nm process technology is paying off, with good returns at both UMC fabs. To date, five of the eight products in the Xilinx Spartan-3 family are in high volume production. In addition, since Xilinx introduced the Spartan-3 family in early 2003, more than 1,200 customers have adopted this family of products. The extremely low price point offered by the 90nm/300mm process is driving Spartan-3 FPGA products into cost-sensitive applications previously exclusive to ASICs and ASSPs, including digital consumer applications, instrumentation, and telecom applications.

Platform capabilities for low-cost, high-volume applications

The 90nm Spartan-3 platform is the world's lowest cost FPGA, offering greater density and more features at an unbeatable price compared to similar products. Spartan-3 offers an industry-leading combination of block RAM and distributed RAM, up to 784 I/Os, a MicroBlaze 32-bit RISC soft processor, and a dedicated 18 x 18 multiplier to support performance up to 330 billion MACs/s XtremeDSP function. In addition, Spartan-3 devices support 24 major I/O standards, including PCI, DDR, LVDS and RSDS.

The XC3S50, XC3S200 and XC3S400 Spartan-3 devices at 50,000, 200,000 and 400,000 system gate densities, respectively, are priced below $6.50*. The XC3S1000 Spartan-3 device with a density of 1 million system gates is priced under $12.0*, and the XC3S1500 with a density of 1.5 million system gates is priced at less than $20.00.
