Xilinx and SENSIO, the maker of SENSIO 3D stereo processors, have announced that they will continue their six-year partnership. The collaboration has enabled both parties to develop a breakthrough 3D video processing technology, the SENSIO S3D-PRO processor.

The SENSIO S3D-PRO processor is designed with Xilinx Spartan-3 programmable devices, the lowest cost FPGA solution for many applications. Used in conjunction with traditional high-resolution players, this next-generation processor enables 3D video output in any format from any device, providing a low-cost, cinema-quality video experience.

The SENSIO S3D-PRO processor was launched in September 2005 at the CEDIA 2005 electronics show in the United States together with an advanced projector system from JVC. It supports multiple video formats and offers different configurations for screening locations ranging from 5 to 300+ seats, such as screening rooms, museums and theme parks.

The SENSIO S3D-PRO processor utilizes a patent-pending universal output architecture, which makes it adaptable to a wide range of devices and applications, and eliminates the need for multiple video servers and channels. Compared to other 3D methods, it uses less processing power and eliminates synchronization problems, thus providing a low-cost video server solution.

By effectively utilizing advanced 90nm semiconductor technology, Spartan-3 devices provide the optimal combination of density and features for SENSIO next-generation systems at the lowest cost.

Accurate and flexible clocking is a key design requirement to achieve the multiple video resolutions supported by SENSIO processors. Using the Spartan-3 FPGA to drive the clock to other external components, engineers can adjust the frequency without changing the external clock generator. Spartan-3 devices also provide the required high frequency capability, with processor cores and input/output signal rates up to 100 MHz and 200 MHz, respectively. The SENSIO S3D-PRO processor also utilizes the 36-bit dedicated multipliers provided by the Spartan-3 FPGA to support a large number of on-chip computations.

SENSIO developers use the Xilinx Integrated Software Environment (ISE), which provides an intuitive suite of design tools for rapid development of Spartan-3-based designs.
