Xilinx has announced the release of version 8.2i of the Integrated Software Environment (ISE) tool suite, the latest version of its widely used design solution, which now supports the company's latest family of 65nm Virtex-5 field-optimized FPGAs. Leveraging the high-performance features of Virtex-5 ExpressFabric technology, the ISE 8.2i design environment can achieve 30 percent faster performance than previous-generation FPGAs. This latest release also features a unique integrated timing closure environment and new productivity enhancements to fully exploit the performance and power benefits of Virtex-5 devices.

Performance, Productivity and Power Consumption

The rich feature set of the ISE 8.2i Design Suite enables designers of Virtex-5 devices to meet performance goals with greater certainty and achieve design closure in less time.

Performance: Achieves the industry's fastest logic performance based on the unique ISE Fmax technology first introduced with ISE 8.1i. The new design kit features next-generation physical synthesis capabilities for pre- and post-route optimization of Virtex-5 designs. Enhanced routing support for the new ExpressFabric technology reduces logic hierarchy and signal delays and compresses designs more efficiently.

Productivity: Provides an improved timing closure environment that provides tighter correlation between logical and physical design domains. Automatic cross-probing between constraints, timing analysis, floorplanning, and implementation reporting provides greater visibility and a more efficient approach to routing and debugging designs. Integrating Xplorer into the 8.2i design flow provides designers with the ability to automatically explore various settings and constraints, thereby greatly improving the performance of users' designs. ISE 8.2i's support for part numbers and pin assignments, as well as the second-generation SparseChevron technology in Virtex-5 FPGAs, greatly simplifies PCB design.

Power consumption: Based on numerous Virtex-5 device features, the new Xpower Estimator tool ensures accurate power estimation, allowing designers to pre-plan power budgets. Xpower comes in an easy-to-use spreadsheet format that can be downloaded for free from the xilinx homepage.

Debug and Verification Options

In conjunction with the ISE 8.2i Design Suite, ChipScope Pro 8.2 debug and verification software is also released. As a plug-in, the ChipScope Pro 8.2 solution reduces validation cycles by up to 50%. Also included is the latest version of the ChipScope Pro Serial IO Toolkit, which simplifies debugging of Virtex-4 FX FPGA high-speed serial IO designs.

ISE software provides programmable logic design solutions to more than 300,000 users worldwide through an intuitive, front-end-to-back-end design environment for all Xilinx product families, including Virtex-4 and Virtex-5 platform FPGAs, Spartan 3rd generation FPGA and CoolRunner-II CPLD. All versions of the ISE 8.2i package support Windows 2000 and Windows XP and Linux Red Hat Enterprise 3.0. ISE Foundation also supports Solaris 2.8 and 2.9.

ISE 8.2i Foundation and ChipScope Pro 8.2 configurations are available immediately, priced from $695 to $2495. A fully functional 60-day evaluation version is available for free download from the Xilinx website.
