Chipworks, which is engaged in reverse reduction engineering and analysis of semiconductor wafers and microelectronic systems, recently announced that it has analyzed two component samples of Xilinx's XC5VLX50Virtex-5FPGA using a 65-nanometer process. One of the components is manufactured by Toshiba Corporation of Japan, a leader in 65nm technology in the digital consumer market; Chipworks is now accepting orders for structural analysis reports from Xilinx/UMC (SAR-0612-801) and Xilinx/Toshiba (SAR-0612-802.). Chipworks has also started a DC transistor characterization test to compare the impact of structure on performance, important information for advanced node competition.

Both devices have 12 metal layers (11 copper and 1 aluminum) and are fabricated on 12-inch wafers. In addition, both components are produced on NMOS transistors using tensile nitride strain technology. But Chipworks' analysis revealed considerable differences in metallization and dielectric structures. Other differences are detailed in a report published by Chipworks for this analysis. When these components are put into mass production, it is believed that the impact of the difference on the performance, cost or power consumption of Virtex-5 will be worth watching.

Chipworks' analysis report fully discloses the various structural and process elements that Xilinx uses to improve Virtex-5 performance, reduce power consumption and reduce cost by 45% compared to previous versions. Chipworks customers can use this information to learn from their peers to improve their designs and accelerate time to market.
