Xilinx announced the start of mass production of the Spartan-3A DSP device, a month earlier than planned. The Spartan-3A DSP platform delivers up to 20 GMACs of performance for less than $30, making it ideal for a wide range of low-cost data-intensive applications such as wireless, video surveillance, personal medical and consumer applications. The Spartan-3A DSP platform is part of Xilinx's XtremeDSP™ solution, which provides developers with a complete portfolio of programmable logic devices, IP, development tools and a third-party DSP ecosystem.

The Spartan-3A DSP enables developers to take full advantage of the flexibility and inherent parallel processing capabilities provided by FPGAs in their development of low-cost and mobile applications. The platform is based on Xilinx's high-performance next-generation Spartan-3 series FPGA and adds the power management and connectivity capabilities of the Spartan-3A platform. At the heart of the Spartan-3A DSP architecture is the XtremeDSP DSP48A slice, which enables designers to implement many discrete algorithmic functions.

Pricing and Availability

The 3SD1800A and 3SD3400A devices are priced at US$29.85 and US$44.95 respectively (prices by the end of 2008 when the volume is 25K). Also available in space-saving CS484 and fine-pitch BGA FG676 packages, as well as lead-free packages, in speed grades 4C/-4I and -5C.
