PLD supplier Xilinx recently hinted that it has no plans to produce 90nm FPGAs at IBM Microelectronics, but will continue to rely on Taiwan's UMC (UMC).

"While UMC remains our primary manufacturing partner, IBM continues to be a future foundry candidate partner," Xilinx said in a statement.

Although UMC has actually been Xilinx's main supplier of 90-nanometer devices for more than a year, the move hints at a change in Xilinx's strategy of using the two manufacturers.

Xilinx did not say why it left IBM, although company officials have acknowledged that IBM has had unsatisfactory yields on its first 90-nanometer product, "Spartan-3." UMC will also produce Xilinx's second 90-nanometer product, the recently launched Virtex 4. Xilinx said the product will be produced on 300mm wafers and begin shipping this fall.

Xilinx's vice president and general manager, Erich Goetting, said Xilinx will consider working with IBM in the production of future products. “For the 90-nanometer process, UMC and IBM have not had much difference in the time when they entered the field, so one does not have much advantage over the other. So we decided to cooperate with UMC. But in the future production of 65-nanometer and 45-nanometer products, Circumstances may change.
