PLD product supplier Xilinx will announce details of its investment in Suzhou foundry He Jian Technology in the near future. Xilinx said the chip factory may one day be needed to reduce chip production costs for it.

Xilinx's disclosure of China's investment plans coincides with various chip manufacturers expanding their sales and production in China. In the last fiscal year, PLD sales in China and other Asia-Pacific countries accounted for 24% of Xilinx's sales, up sharply from 14% in the previous year.

Xilinx doesn't want to make chips at Hejian Technology now, but it considers using the company to reduce the cost of producing chips that don't require advanced processes in the future. Like many US chipmakers, Xilinx relies heavily on Asian manufacturers for its production.

As more and more low-cost capacity comes into production in China and elsewhere, Xilinx and other fabless chip companies need to consider adjusting their production plans to improve the competitive landscape, said Sandeep Vij, Xilinx's vice president of sales.

Xilinx said the investment in Hejian Technology was made 18 months ago, and the company would not disclose the specific investment amount.
