U.S. chip maker Xilinx said it will move some of its chip design business to China in the next two to three years due to China's growing role in its Asian business.

He also said that China's low-cost and huge market for digital consumer products has prompted Xilinx to invest in and ship. Hejian was formed by former employees of Taiwan's United Semiconductor Corporation (UMC). UMC has stated that UMC has no relationship with Hejian. However, Xilinx owns UMC shares, and in the past fiscal year, 70% of Xilinx's wafers were provided by UMC. Roelandts said UMC encouraged Xilinx to work with Hejian, but he declined to disclose specific numbers of investments or orders. Hejian is expected to start producing chips for Xilinx within the next six to nine months.

Roelandts expects Xilinx's revenue from the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) to grow by 50 percent in fiscal 2005.
