Xilinx Automotive FPGAs and Connectivity Solutions Enable Scalable, Flexible Infrastructure Platforms to Accelerate Infotainment System Development

Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced a solution that integrates Xilinx Automotive (XA) Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Intellectual Property (IP). This integrated solution is included in the low-power Intel In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) reference design for car head unit applications. This reference design combines an XA solution with an Intel® Atom® processor to provide system developers with a new level of performance, scalability and flexibility when developing open automotive infotainment platforms.

As consumers demand in the home and office, the demand for in-vehicle digital information access and entertainment applications is growing, and this collaboration between Xilinx and Intel, as well as their respective ecosystem providers, addresses that need . As a member of the Intel Embedded and Communications Alliance, Xilinx has worked closely with Intel to provide mutual customers with complete, flexible automotive electronics solutions that accelerate system development. This latest development combines the inherent flexibility and built-in connectivity of the XASpartan®-3 FPGA family of platforms with the high-performance, low-power processing of the Intel® Atom® processor Z530 and Intel® System Control Aggregator US15W And features such as strong ecosystem support.

Powerful Development Platform

The low-power Intel IVI reference design leverages an XA Spartan-3E FPGA-based solution to extend the platform's flexibility and integrate several automotive-specific features, such as video capture support and MOST® network connectivity. The solution incorporates features including SD 2.0 (including SDHC), video frame grabber for camera input, Bluetooth connectivity, Low Pin Count interface for BIOS configuration, integrated support for external networks LogiCORE® NIC IP for MOST or MOST connectivity for the media local bus for the controller, and flash interface support. These functions target embedded systems in automotive center consoles, which typically include navigation, entertainment, and Bluetooth wireless connectivity for portable devices.

The XA Spartan-3E FPGA is part of an end-to-end automotive solution developed by Xilinx with several industry-leading automotive market partners in the Xilinx Alliance Program. XA solutions integrate hardware and software components including pre-validated Xilinx and third-party application-optimized IP building blocks. These are required to implement fully functional automotive subsystems including automotive networks based on industry standards such as MOST, FlexRay and CAN. In addition, XA programmable devices provide developers with the best architectural flexibility to better define system partitions and adapt to multiple end-user technology standards. This is in stark contrast to the product development constraints imposed by the preset architecture and functionality of existing Application Specific Standard Devices (ASSPs).
