U.S. chip maker Xilinx said it will move some of its chip design business to China in the next two to three years due to China's growing role in its Asian business.

Xilinx CEO Willem Roelandts said that Xilinx has so far invested tens of millions of dollars in He Jian Technology, a wafer foundry located in Suzhou, and plans to sign a contract with He Jian Technology within a year. The agreement, which indicates that Xilinx will move the low-end manufacturing part of its chip business from Taiwan to the mainland, where Xilinx has three major telecom customers.

He also said that China's low-cost and huge market for digital consumer products has prompted Xilinx to invest in and ship. At the same time, Xilinx's investment in Hejian also means that it may invest in other chip makers and may build an R&D center in China. But until now Xilinx has not disclosed how many shares it owns in Hejian.

Hejian was formed by former employees of Taiwan's United Semiconductor Corporation (UMC). UMC has stated that UMC has no relationship with Hejian. However, Xilinx owns UMC shares, and in the past fiscal year, 70% of Xilinx's wafers were provided by UMC. Roelandts said UMC encouraged Xilinx to work with Hejian, but he declined to disclose specific numbers of investments or orders. Hejian is expected to start producing chips for Xilinx within the next six to nine months.

Roelandts expects Xilinx's revenue from the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) to grow by 50 percent in fiscal 2005.

Xilinx is the world's largest producer of programmable logic chips, which are mainly used in automobiles, personal digital assistants and servers.
