The bq2407x family of devices are integrated Li-Ion linear chargers and system power path management devices for space-constrained portable applications. These devices operate from a USB port or AC adapter and support charging currents up to 1.5A. They feature input voltage protection over the input voltage range and thus support unregulated adapters. The USB input current limit accuracy and startup sequence of the bq2407x allow the device to comply with the USB-IF inrush current specification. Additionally, Input Dynamic Power Management (VIN-DPM) prevents chargers from corrupting misconfigured USB sources.

The bq2407x features Dynamic Power Path Management (DPPM) to independently charge the battery while powering the system. The DPPM circuit reduces the charge current when the input current limit causes the system output to drop below the DPPM threshold; therefore, the charge current can be monitored at any time while powering the system load. This feature reduces the number of charge and discharge cycles on the battery, enables graceful termination of charge and enables the system to operate from a defective or incomplete battery pack.

In addition, the series of chargers provide a regulated system input, allowing the system to turn on instantly after connecting to a power source, even when the battery is fully discharged. The power path management architecture also allows the use of batteries to supplement system current when the adapter cannot supply peak system current, which in turn enables the use of smaller adapters.

The battery charging process is divided into three stages: precharge, constant current charging and constant voltage charging. During all charging phases, an internal control loop monitors the IC junction temperature and reduces the charging current if this internal temperature threshold is exceeded. The charger power stage and charge current sensing functions are fully integrated. The charger features high-accuracy current and voltage regulation loops, charge status display, and charge termination. Input current limit and charge current are programmable using external resistors.
