Xilinx has announced the launch of the Virtex-4 FPGA-based 667Mbps DDR2 reference design, which provides the highest bandwidth and highest reliability memory interface solution in the FPGA industry. The Xilinx 667 DDR2-SDRAM interface features Virtex-4 ChipSync technology, a runtime calibration circuit that improves design margins and overall system reliability while reducing design cycles.
Virtex-4 FPGAs take the guesswork out of memory interface design, enabling system designers to build reliable, high-performance interfaces for memory technologies such as the latest 667Mbps DDR2 SDRAM. The combination of Virtex-4 silicon features, proven hardware reference designs and the easy-to-use Xilinx Memory Interface Generator tool provides design flexibility and reliability. Xilinx memory solutions are validated using memory devices from vendors such as Micron and Samsung, including the new 667Mbps DDR2 reference design.
ChipSync technology simplifies the design of memory interfaces by compensating for variations in routing, process, temperature, and voltage that can create distortions between data and clock signals that cannot be properly estimated at design time. This unique feature eases post-design tuning efforts, improving design cycle times and overall system reliability. Experimental results show that Virtex-4 FPGAs also provide the industry's best signal integrity for high-speed memory interface designs.
The user-friendly Memory Interface Generator software tool supports any device/package combination, giving system designers greater flexibility to easily personalize their designs. The reference design is in Verilog or VHDL and uses a modular approach to clearly provide the physical layer, user interface and controller blocks.
