The HVD 251 is used for applications using the Controller Area Network (CAN) serial communication physical layer according to the ISO 11898 standard. The HVD 251 provides differential transmit capability to the bus and differential receive capability to the CAN controller at 1 megabit per second (Mbps).

Designed for operation in harsh environments, the unit features cross-conductor, overvoltage, and ground protection losses to ±36 V, thermal protection, and a -7-V to 12-V common-mode range, as well as protection against ±200 V Tolerance of V. The transceiver interfaces single-ended CAN controllers to differential CAN buses in industrial, building automation, and automotive applications.

RS, PIN 8, select one of three different modes of operation: high speed, ramp control or low power mode. The high speed mode of operation is selected by connecting pin 8 to ground, allowing the transmitter output transistor to switch as fast as possible , without limiting the rising and falling slopes. The rising and falling slopes can be adjusted by connecting a resistor to pin 8's ground; the slopes are proportional to the pin's output current. The slope control is approximately 15-V/s slew rate for an external resistance value of 10kΩ and approximately 2-V/s slew rate for 100kΩ.

If a high logic level is applied to Rs pin 8, the device enters a low current standby mode where the driver is turned off and the receiver remains active. Returns to normal mode when the local protocol controller sends the device to the bus.
