Xilinx (Xilinx) has announced that it has expanded its foundry relationship with semiconductor foundries UMC (UMC) and Toshiba, respectively, and will expand the cooperation to include technology development of 65nm and more sophisticated processes.
In preparation for the manufacture of next-generation Xilinx FPGAs, Xilinx and UMC have produced 65nm prototype wafers, including actual programmable logic circuits, at UMC's 300mm fab in Tainan, Taiwan through joint R&D. In addition, the two companies also announced that they have entered the pre-process definition stage for future development of 45nm FPGAs.
For more than a decade, Xilinx has relied on UMC as its premier manufacturer for high-volume production of programmable chips. Xilinx and UMC launched the world's first 90nm FPGA product line in 2003. In terms of cumulative sales revenue, UMC ranks first among all foundries in terms of total shipments of 90nm wafers, and Xilinx supplies more than 70% of the world's 90nm FPGAs. A total of four 90nm FPGA families and 28 devices are manufactured by UMC, including Virtex-4, Spartan-3E, Spartan-3L and Spartan-3.
Xilinx and Toshiba also announced that they have reached an agreement on the joint development of next-generation 65nm-class FPGAs, and have successfully produced 65nm FPGA prototype wafers, including actual programmable logic circuits. Toshiba is currently one of the few leading manufacturers in the world capable of mass-producing 65nm products, and the company is currently conducting research and development work on the 45nm process. The two companies will also study the possibility of continued cooperation, including the development of FPGAs based on Toshiba's 45nm process technology.
The successful execution of the 90nm process agreement signed in October 2004 laid the foundation for further cooperation between Xilinx and Toshiba on the 65nm process. Xilinx's flagship 90nm Virtex-4 platform FPGA is mass-produced at Toshiba's state-of-the-art 300mm wafer fabrication facility in Oita, Kyushu, Japan.
The strategic foundry relationship with Toshiba not only ensures another stable source of supply for Xilinx to manufacture cutting-edge FPGA products using the industry's most advanced process technologies, but also allows the company to rely on Toshiba's expertise in integrating high-level design and process technologies , which is a key aspect of doing advanced process geometry design. The relationship will also secure Toshiba's access to volume semiconductor business using state-of-the-art technology from one of the world's leading fabless semiconductor companies, thereby strengthening the company's leadership in the important area of large-scale system integration (LSI) business.
As one of the pioneers of the outsourced semiconductor business model two decades ago, Xilinx has always been at the forefront of the advanced manufacturing process race, the company was the first to introduce 150nm process technology in 2001, 130nm process in 2002 and 90nm process technology in 2003 one of several companies. Xilinx has also been one of the top purchasers of 300mm wafers in the world.
Due to their regular structure and reprogrammability, Xilinx FPGAs are ideal for validating and testing advanced fabrication processes. Compared to traditional fixed semiconductor device architectures, FPGAs are easier to identify and isolate during processing, making FPGAs an ideal process enabler for semiconductor volume manufacturers. Xilinx said that in order to maintain its leading edge and meet market demand for FPGA products, Xilinx will continue to implement a multi-foundry source strategy.
