Xilinx announced today that Xi'an Jiaotong University took part in the 7th ABU Robocon 2008 held in Pune, India with the help of Xilinx's programmable solutions. Win again. Robocon is a prestigious competition where engineering students compete to design the best robot for a particular challenge.

This annual competition was launched by the Asia Pacific Broading Union in 2002 to develop strategic thinking, leadership and team building skills. The Xilinx-sponsored team from Xi'an Jiaotong University won the right to represent China in a national competition held in Beijing earlier this year. The team was the first to reach the final after defeating 16 other teams from the Middle East and Asia, and finally won the 2008 Robocon Robotics Competition. The online version of China Central Television made a special report on the champions during the National Day.

The team leveraged the Xilinx Spartan®-3E FPGA to connect the sensor and actuator system to a real-time microprocessor, while leveraging the high-performance DSP capabilities of the Spartan-3A DSP device for high-speed video detection. The Xilinx MicroBlaze® soft processor acts as a central connectivity bridge to connect the major subsystems of the robot. Team members post daily updates on a dedicated project blog, where they share their knowledge and experience gained from design.
