XA FPGA and DDC's high-performance image processing IP provide a cost-effective programmable development platform for visual driver assistance applications
Xilinx (Xilinx) at Electronica 2008 showcased the Xilinx Automotive Optical Flow (XA Optical Flow) solution for visual driver assistance (DA) systems. This cost-effective, programmable, field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based platform utilizes Digital Design Corporation's (DDC) high-performance image processing technology and can be customized to support a wide range of advanced applications, including pedestrian detection , Collision Warning, Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Detection, Reversing and Parking Assist.
The Xilinx Automotive Optical Flow solution provides scalable processing capabilities that flexibly implement the pixel-level image processing required to extract relative motion information from sequences of video frames. The specific FPGA-based implementation provides a set of tunable parameters that allow fine tuning of performance to target application requirements. Xilinx demonstrated this latest automotive solution at the recent Electronica 2008 exhibition at the International Congress Center (ICM) at the New Munich Exhibition Center in Germany.
Jon Cropley, director of automotive research at IMS Research, said: "The emerging visual driver assistance system market is expected to grow from $941 million in 2010 to $2.587 billion in 2014. The automotive industry has gradually moved from offering simple camera systems to more The evolution of advanced collision warning systems, which alert drivers to potential collision hazards, is further driving the growth of this market."
Paul Zoratti, Senior System Architect, Automotive Solutions, Xilinx, said: "Hyper-parallel processing performance, combined with cost-effective feature density, make XA FPGAs an attractive programmable platform for automotive system developers. Our new XA The Optical Flow solution uses DDC's image processing technology as the main building block and is more powerful. Traditional serial DSPs are limited to applications that often cannot keep up with high-end pixel processing, and the shortcomings of ASIC and ASSP solutions are It’s impossible to quickly integrate new algorithms and applications as the market evolves. Now with Xilinx automotive solutions, developers can get rid of those constraints.”
Xilinx Automotive Optical Flow Solutions
The Xilinx Automotive Optical Flow solution is based on Xilinx Spartan(R)-3 devices and the DDC Optical Flow IP core, as well as innovative motion estimation algorithms. The Optical Flow IP core extracts relevant information about the road environment from the video images obtained by the in-vehicle camera system. The extracted moving images are divided into independent objects (pixel blocks) and processed using block matching techniques. The output is a 2D vector map that can be used to assess collision threats.
The block matching function requires ultra-high-speed computing power to complete the calculation of the sum of absolute errors (SAD) between image frames. Xilinx FPGAs can perform operations in parallel, so multiple steps can be performed in a single clock cycle. Xilinx optical flow solutions offer higher performance and efficiency than traditional digital signal processing (DSP) CPUs that typically operate serially and require extremely high clock rates.
David Kitchka, Project Manager at DDC, said: "As the image resolution of in-vehicle cameras increases, so does the amount of data that needs to be processed. Existing approaches based on DSP CPUs cannot keep up with the changing performance requirements and thus face significant challenges. The combination of Intex FPGAs with high-end optical flow IP cores provides a scalable processing solution whose speed can meet the requirements of advanced visual driver assistance applications."
