XILINX announces the world's lowest cost

Programmable PCI EXPRESS solution passes certification test

Xilinx Corporation (NASDAQ: XLNX) today announced that its programmable PCI Express endpoint silicon solution has successfully passed all the latest PCI Express certification and interoperability tests. Pricing for less than $12* in high volume, this two-chip solution is the industry's lowest cost programmable PCI Expre-ss solution listed on the PCI-SIG PCI Express Integrator List and fully PCI Express 1.0a compliant.

Comprising the Philips PX1011A PCI Express PHY, Xilinx Spartan™-3 FPGA, and optimized Xilinx PCI Express LogiCORE™ IP core, this solution is ideal for a wide range of high-volume applications including consumer video and audio, medical imaging, Test equipment, graphics cards, high-end servers, etc.

A flexible solution at a competitive price point

According to Electronic Trend Publications (ETP), the number of PCI Express ports will exceed 2 billion in 2008. "In response to market demand for PCI Express-based products, industry leaders are pricing their PCI Express products low," said Steve Berry, principal analyst at ETP. "The aggressive pricing of the Philips-Xilinx PCI-Express solution will help accelerate adoption of the interface in many different high-volume applications by providing a flexible solution at a competitive price point compared to fixed devices."

About this Programmable PCI Express Solution

This robust solution includes a Philips PCI Express PHY that provides a SERDES serializer/deserializer and physical coding sublayer (PCS) with excellent bit rate performance. The Philips PHY's low power consumption and small package make it ideal for ExpressCard applications. The Xilinx Spartan-3 FPGA portion integrates an industry-leading feature set, including block RAM and distributed RAM, up to 784 I/Os, a MicroBlaze® 32-bit RISC soft processor, and support for multiply-add (MAC) functions (specifically The 18 × 18 multipliers provide up to 330 billion operations per second (MAC) embedded XtremeDSP? function.

Programmable PCI Express Design Kit

A limited number of fully loaded reference designs and design kits for this low-cost solution are available for immediate download through the Tentmaker Systems website (www.tentmakersystems.com). The Tentmaker PX Wave Design Kit includes Gerber board files, schematics, reference designs, example drivers, the Philips PX1011A-EL1 PCI Express PHY, and a Xilinx Spartan-3 device. The design kit also contains four video analog-to-digital conversion devices. There are multiple logic analyzer headers and DIP switches for easy development and debugging. The PX Wave Design Kit is only $1800.
