Following TSMC's report that the 40nm process has yield problems, UMC's client FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chip manufacturer Xilinx also reported that the high-end product Virtex-5 is large due to the 65nm process yield problem. Out of stock and may not be resolved until September. TSMC and UMC have been out of 40nm and 65nm successively, indicating that the foundry has announced mature advanced process technology, and I am afraid there is still a gap between the expectations of customers. Because the fab can not keep up with the pace of shipments, not only does Xilin Thinking was so anxious that he even forced him to lower his financial forecast. However, UMC has not commented.

The hottest topic in the semiconductor industry recently is the change in the interaction between wafer foundries and customers. He was born in R&D and actively worked hard on the business side after taking office. Xilinx, a major UMC FPGA customer, announced that the financial forecast for April to June was lowered to a quarterly decline of about 5% (the original estimate was -4 to 4%). Xilinx said that the high-end product Virtex-5 chip, which was originally in strong market demand , encountering production and supply-side constraints, and will seek solutions between July and September. Due to the supply of Xilinx Virtex-5 chip manufacturers, mainly UMC adopts the 65nm process, the client recently reported that the delivery date of UMC's 65nm process chips has been delayed by more than 70 days from the original 2 months.

Although foundries are reluctant to express their opinions on specific customers and orders, semiconductor industry players believe that both UMC and Fujitsu are foundries for Xilinx, but this time, Xilinx suddenly lowered its financial forecast. It should be that the UMC production link, which supplies more chips, caught Xilinx by surprise. Xilinx originally expected strong demand in the 3G market, especially for TD-CDMA equipment and base stations in mainland China, but this time the production side was unable to cooperate, causing Xilinx to miss out on market opportunities.

Semiconductor industry players revealed that UMC's 12-inch factory has responded urgently, but there is still a period of time before the normal delivery time is really restored. As for TSMC, it is reported that the recent yield rate of the 40nm process has been effectively increased from the low water level to more than 60% after the emergency replacement of the process formula.

However, it is worth noting that customers of TSMC and UMC are likely to consider diversifying the risk of foundry because of this yield problem. NVIDIA executives recently pointed out that they may seek another generation of factories, and Xilinx is also after the 45nm process, with Samsung.
