The switching current is limited to 1.2A at a fixed switching frequency of 1.2MHz, allowing the use of high-brightness LEDs under normal lighting conditions.

The default current of the white LED is set by an external sensor resistor, Rset, which adjusts the feedback voltage to 200mV, as shown in the typical application diagram below. During operation, the LED current can be controlled via the CTRL pin using a single-wire digital interface (EasyScale™ protocol). Alternatively, a pulse width modulated signal can be applied to the CTRL pin, and the duty cycle of this pin determines the feedback reference voltage. Whether in digital or PWM mode, the TPS61165 device does not burst LED current; therefore, it does not generate audible noise on the output capacitor. For maximum protection, the device features an integrated open LED protection feature that disables the TPS61165 device to prevent the output from exceeding the absolute maximum voltage rating in an open LED condition.
