According to Tianfeng International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will launch Mini LED BLU 10-12-inch iPads and 15-17-inch MacBooks from the fourth quarter of 2020 to the first quarter of 2021 and the first half of 2021, respectively.
Analysts believe that wide color gamut (WCG) and high contrast are the next key technological innovations for Apple's medium and large-sized products, and Mini LED is the best technical solution. At present, high-end smartphones have generally supported WCG and high contrast, so high-end medium and large size products support WCG and high contrast to differentiate important products in the future.
Ming-Chi Kuo said that because Apple's medium and large-sized products are mainly positioned as productivity tools, compared with OLED, it is more suitable to use Mini LED with longer life and no branding problems as the realization of WCG / high contrast / HDR / dynamic backlight partition (Local Dimming) technology.
In addition, Ming-Chi Kuo emphasized that the 31.6-inch independent display adopts a similar Mini LED structure (with larger LED chips), while iPad and MacBook use true Mini LED technology (with smaller LED chips), so the number of LED particles used for backlighting is estimated. It is 15-25 times that of 31.6-inch monitors, and it is believed that 31.6-inch standalone monitors are positioned at very high-end, so shipments are not expected to contribute significantly to the supply chain. However, through the experience of producing 31.6-inch independent displays, Apple and the supply chain are expected to improve key design and production technologies (such as mass transfer, dynamic backlight partitioning and driver IC design), which will be beneficial to the commercialization of Mini LED iPad and MacBook in the future.
Suppliers may come from Taiwan and Japan manufacturers. Ming-Chi Kuo expects Epistar, Toyoda Gosei, and Ruiyi to be the biggest beneficiaries of Mini LED adoption in iPads and MacBooks. LED supply chain: Epistar, Toyoda Gosei and TE Opto (Fengjing Optoelectronics, for Epistar and Toyoda Gosei joint venture) are responsible for exclusive LED production, design and sales. Ruiyi is the exclusive backlight supplier. The exclusive panel supplier is LGD, but since Mini LED panels have a low contribution to the overall revenue, it is believed that LGD is not the main beneficiary.
