GENERAL DESCRIPTION The LM199 series of precision, temperature stable monolithic Zener diodes with a temperature coefficient factor of ten are better high quality references than Zener diodes. Constructed on a single chip is the temperature stable circuit Zener and positive reference. The active circuit reduces the dynamic impedance of the Zener by about 0.5 watts and allows the Zener to operate over the 0.5 mA to 10 mA current range with essentially no voltage or temperature coefficient of variation. In addition, a new underground structure enables the Zener to have lower noise and superior long-term stability than ordinary monolithic Zener diodes. The package is equipped with a heat shield to reduce power consumption and increase temperature heater regulation. The LM199 series of references are very easy to use and free from the problems often encountered with ordinary zener diodes. There is little reference to hysteresis voltage and temperature cycling. Also, the LM199 is free of voltage changes due to the leads to be stressed. Finally, since the unit is temperature stable, the warm-up time is fast. The LM199 can be used in almost any application to improve the performance of general zener diodes. Some ideal applications are analog-to-digital converters, calibration standards, precision voltage or current sources, or precision power supplies. Additionally, in many cases, the LM199 can be replaced in existing equipment references with minimal wiring changes. The devices of the LM199 series are packaged in a standard hermetically sealed TO-46 package with thermal shielding.
