MIC4043 - Low Voltage Secondary Side Shunt Regulator
General Description The shunt regulator MIC4043 is optimized for secondaryside regulation in low voltage power supplies. It uses an output stage guaranteed to swing 400mV at ground, and the MIC4043 can be used for power supply operation down to 1.8V, even requiring more than 1.2V opto-isolator space. In power supply applications, usually the driver MIC4043 is an opto-isolated feedback circuit for LEDs. The MIC4043 monitors the resistor-split output voltage and receiver error current through the opto-isolator's LED (secondary side), while the opto-isolator's transistor (primary side) provides the feedback input to the controller for this signal. Also the actual MIC4043 other voltage monitoring applications require an opencollector output. The MIC4043 replaces the traditional '431 type shunt regulator allowing low voltage applications where there is insufficient headroom for a 2.5V regulator series opto-isolator.
