Advanced Synchronous Rectifier Dual Buck MOSFET Driver and Protection Features
The ISL6614 of the ISL6613 integrates two MOSFET drivers designed to drive two independent power supplies in a multiphase interleaved buck converter channel topology. Combined with the HIP63xx or ISL65xx these drivers form a complete core voltage regulator solution for a polyphase buck PWM controller and N-channel MOSFETs for advanced microprocessors. The upper and lower gate drivers of the ISL6614 operate simultaneously in a range from 5V to 12V. This drivevoltage provides the necessary flexibility to optimize the trade-off between gate charge and conduction losses involved in the application. An advanced adaptive zero shoot-through protection is simultaneously integrated to prevent the upper and lower MOSFETs from going on simultaneously and minimize dead time. These products add an overvoltage protection function before VCC exceeds its operational threshold before generating a low gate-side MOSFET (LGATE) connected to the node. The converter's output voltage is then limited by the low-side MOSFET threshold, which provides some protection if the microprocessor's upper MOSFET(s) is shorted during startup. A thermal protection function prevents faults from excessive power dissipation caused by the output by shutting down when its junction temperature exceeds 150°C (typ.). The driver returns to 108° (typ) once its junction temperature is reset. The ISL6614 also features a tri-state PWM input which, in cooperation with Intersil's multi-phase PWM controller, prevents transient output shutdowns when the output voltage is negative. This feature eliminates the Schottky diode, used in some systems to protect the load from reverse output voltage events.
