ADP3401-GSM Power Management System

Overview
The ADP3401 is a versatile power management system IC optimized for GSM handsets. The wide input voltage range of 3.0 V to 7.0 makes the ADP3401 ideal for a three-cell NiMH design for a single-cell Li-Ion battery. The current consumer ADP3401 is optimized to maximize battery life, with a ground current of only 150 mA when the phone is in standby (digital LDO and SIM supply active). An under-voltage lockout (UVLO) function prevents startup when there is not enough energy in the battery. All four LDOs are optimized to integrate the power of one of the key subsystems of the telephony block. Their novel anyCAP™ architecture requires only a small stable output capacitance, with the LDO being insensitive to the capacitor's equivalent series resistance (ESR). This makes them stable with any capacitor, including ceramic (MLCC) types for space constrained applications. A boost converter implementation provides both the SIM module and level shifting circuitry to accommodate logic signals 3 V and 5 V to the SIM module. Precise control is available for power charging when the battery is registered, the keyboard interface, and the auxiliary battery backup for the real-time clock. This allows a simple interface between the ADP3401, GSM processor, charger and keyboard. The 28-pin TSSOP package has maximized thermal dissipation capability. Additionally, reset circuitry and thermal shutdown functions have been implemented to support robust system designs.
