MAX1804 - External Quad Feedback Input Power Integrated...
GENERAL DESCRIPTION The integrated feedback design of the MAX1804 improves power supply system voltage regulation. The device corrects line and load regulation problems and can be used to compensate for voltage drops in power management distribution lines. The regulation set point is applied by the external reference voltage at the ADJ pin. Differentiate the feedback integration between the reference and the MAX1804, and correct the current applied to the feedback of the voltage regulator. The four inputs on the MAX1804 allow voltage monitoring in some local and remote locations to properly distribute losses from long traces, connectors, and switches. This eliminates the long-term wasteful practice of adjusting the regulator's output voltage high enough to correct for worst-case voltage drops. This is especially helpful in systems where load currents vary widely and parts of the load are often turned off or disconnected (eg, in laptops). If the load switch opens and the output voltage senses an input waterfall, the MAX1804 automatically disables that input and adjusts the regulator's output voltage to a minimum of the remaining active input. If all inputs are disabled, the OUT pin is in a high impedance state, leaving the output voltage uncorrected. When SHDN is low, the MAX1804 consumes less than 1µA and its input and output are high impedance. The MAX1804 is available in a 10-pin μMAX package, about half the size of an 8-pin SOIC package.
