ML4800 - Power Factor Correction and PWM Combination Controller
Overview The ML4800 is a power correction factor controller, switched power supply. Power Factor Correction (PFC) allows the use of small, lower cost bulk capacitors, reduces power line load and stress on switching FETs, and results in full compliance with IEC1000-3-2 specifications in the power supply. Intended as a BiCMOS version of the industry standard ML4824, the ML4800 includes a lead executive circuit, average current, "boost" type power factor correction and tail edge, and pulse width modulation (PWM). It also includes the TriFault Detection™ feature to help ensure that no unsafe conditions will result from a single component failure in the PFC. Gate-1A drive capability minimizes the need for external drive circuitry. Low power requirements increase efficiency and reduce component cost. The overvoltage comparator shuts down the PFC section during a sudden load shedding event. Part of the PFC also includes peak current limit and input voltage brownout protection. The PWM section can operate in current or voltage mode at up to 250kHz and includes an accurate 50% duty cycle limit to prevent transformer saturation.
