MAX1906 - Cell Li+ Battery Pack Protector with Integrated Fuse Driver
The MAX1906 protects lithium-ion/lithium polymer (lithium) battery packs from overvoltage conditions by blowing out a three-terminal fuse. The IC reset protection circuit used together provides a high level of safety against overcharging Li-ion batteries. It can be used with 2-, 3-, or 4-cell Li-Ion batteries in series. The MAX1906 monitors single-cell battery voltage. If any battery voltage exceeds the overvoltage threshold for more than 2.1s, the MAX1906 activates the internal thyristor. The thyristor sinks enough current to strike the external protection fuse, permanently disabling the battery pack. Alternatively, the IC can drive a gate external MOSFET, blowing the fuse. The MAX1906 also provides a voltage detection pin for disconnect protection. If a disconnected pin is detected, the disconnect output is pulled low. The MAX1906 includes a test mode, which determines the assembled battery pack if the circuit operates correctly. The low-cost MAX1906 is available in a thermally enhanced 16-pin QFN package.
