MAX1773 - Power Source Selection for Dual-Battery Systems

The MAX1773/MAX1773A highly integrated ICs serve multiple sources of control logic for power systems. They directly drive an external P-channel MOSFET of choice from an AC adapter and dual battery charging and discharging sources. The selection presents the presence of a power source based on the state of the battery. The MAX1773/MAX1773A use an integrated analog comparator to detect low-battery conditions and check for battery presence using the battery thermistor output. Design and use of the MAX1773/MAX1773A charger with a buck topology. They provide a simple and easy control solution to a difficult analog power control problem. The MAX1773/MAX1773A provide most of the power source monitoring and selection, freeing the system's power-management microprocessor (µP) for other tasks. This not only simplifies the development of firmware for the power management of the microprocessor, but also puts the microprocessor into a standby state, thereby reducing system power consumption. The MAX1773A is recommended for new designs.
