The DS2720 single-cell rechargeable Li+ battery protection IC provides the electronic safety features required for rechargeable Li-Ion applications, including battery charging, protection circuitry to limit levels of cell depletion from damage during overcurrent and maximizing battery life . Protection is the conduction path that facilitates electronic disconnection of charging and discharging switching devices, such as low-cost N-channel power MOSFETs. Since the DS2720 provides an external N-channel protection MOSFET high-side driver from a 9V charge pump, the superior on-resistance performance test results compared to common low-side protection circuits that use the same FET. The FET resistance actually discharges with the battery. Adding to the uniqueness of the DS2720 is the system's ability to control redundant rechargeable Li+ battery systems either from the control FET data interface or dedicated inputs, which eliminates the need for power switches. Through its 1-Wire interface, the DS2720 enables host system read/write access to status and control registers, instrumentation registers and general purpose data storage. Each device has a factoryprogrammed 64-bit network address, allowing it to be handled individually by the host system.
