BQ2945 - Gas meter IC with SMBus interface
The bq2945 gas meter IC, which provides an SMBus interface, is used for battery packs or in system installations to maintain an accurate record of provided battery charging. “The bq2945 directly supports the ability to monitor NiCd, NiMH, and Li-Ion battery chemistries. The bq2945 uses the System Management V1.0 Bus (SMBus) protocol and supports Smart Battery Data (SBData) commands.” The bq2945 also supports Charge control function for SBData. The battery is responsible for the state, remaining capacity, remaining time, and chemistry available on the serial link. Battery charging status can be directly displayed by five-segment LED display to graphically depict battery empty in 20% increments. The bq2945 estimates battery selfdischarge based on an internal timer and temperature sensor and stores the user programmable rate information in an external EEPROM. The bq2945 also automatically recalibrates or "learns" the battery capacity during discharge cycles from full empty. The bq2945 operates directly from three nickel chemistries. With REF output and external transistors, simple, inexpensive built-in regulators can provide VCC for other battery configurations. An external EEPROM is required to program the bq2945 and initial values to function properly.
