MAX5918 - Low-Voltage, Dual Hot-Swap Controller with Independent ON/OFF Control
The MAX5918 and MAX5919 are +1 V to 13.2 V dual hot-swap controllers with independent on/off control for complete dual-supply system protection. They allow for safe insertion and removal of circuit card backplanes in the field. The MAX5918 and MAX5919 operate down to 1V providing an input above the 2.7V discharge filter capacitor provided by the circuit card to provide a low impedance live backplane. High surges of current from the backplane's line cards can burn up connectors and components, or momentarily crash the backplane power causing a system reset. The MAX5918 and MAX5919 hot-swap controllers prevent these problems from escalating output voltage and current regulation to preset limits when the board is powered on, making the system stable and safe. After the startup cycle is complete, two on-chip comparators provide Variable Speed/Double Layer™ protection against short circuit and overcurrent faults, as well as immunity to system noise and load transients. In the event of a fault, the load is disconnected. “The MAX5918L and MAX5919L must restart after a false fault and automatically after the MAX5918A and MAX5919A fault. The MAX5918 and MAX5919 integrate an on-board charge pump driver for low cost, external N-channel gate MOSFETs. The device provides comprehensive features like startup current Regulation and current glitch protection to eliminate external timing resistors and capacitors. These devices provide open-drain status outputs, adjustable start-up timer, and adjustable current limit. The MAX5918 provides output under/over voltage protection, while the MAX5919 provides output for each channel Undervoltage/overvoltage monitoring is provided on each channel. The MAX5918 and MAX5919 are available in a space-saving 16-pin QSOP package and are specified over the extended -40°C to +85°C temperature range.
