The TK83854 family of integrated circuits provides positive power factor correction for power systems that would otherwise draw non-sinusoidal currents on sinusoidal power lines. These components implement all the control functions necessary to establish a power supply preconditioning capability that optimally uses the current supplied to the power line while minimizing line current distortion. To do this, the TK83854 contains a voltage amplifier, precision analog multiplier/divider, current amplifier, and a fixed frequency PWM. In addition, the TK83854 contains a power MOSFET gate driver, 7.5 V baseline predictor, load enable comparator, low supply detection and overcurrent protection comparator. The TK83854 family uses average current mode control to achieve stable fixed frequency current control and low distortion. As with peak current mode control, average current control can precisely maintain sinusoidal current without slope compensation. The high reference voltage and high oscillator amplitude of the TK83854 reduce noise susceptibility, while the fast PWM element allows chopping frequencies above 200 kHz. The TK83854 can be used in systems with line voltage variations ranging from 75 to 275 V and cross-line frequencies from 50 Hz to 400 Hz. To reduce the burden on the circuit powering this device, the TK83854 series have low startup up to supply current. These devices are available in 16-pin plastic dual-in-line (DIP) and 16-pin surface mount (SOP) packages.
