MAX1714 - High-speed step-down controller for notebook computers
The MAX1714 pulse-width modulation (PWM) controller provides high efficiency, excellent transient response, and requires high DC output accuracy to enhance high-voltage batteries to generate low voltages in notebook CPU cores or chip-set/RAM supplies in computers. America's proprietary Quick-PWM™ fast-response, constant-on-time PWM control scheme handles wide input/output voltage ratios with ease, and provides 100ns "instant" response while maintaining a relatively constant switching frequency for load transients. The MAX1714 achieves high efficiency by eliminating the cost of the current-sense resistor found in traditional current-mode PWM. Efficiency is further enhanced by the drive capability of very large synchronousrectifierMOSFETs. Single-stage buck conversion allows these devices to step directly down the high-voltage battery pack for the highest possible efficiency. Also, the two-stage conversion (instead of stepping down the +5 V system supply battery) allows the lowest physical size at the higher switching frequency. The MAX1714 is for CPU cores, chipsets, DRAM or other low voltage supplies down to 1V. The MAX1714A is available in a 20-pin QSOP package including overvoltage protection. The MAX1714B is available without overvoltage protection in a 16-pin QSOP package. For application requirements for VID compliance or control of the DAC output voltage, see the MAX1710/MAX1711 data sheets. For dual output versions, refer to the MAX1715† data sheet.
