Lithium battery applications are becoming more and more popular, and lithium batteries are also a request system for battery management

According to Jiang Haofeng, in terms of battery management system protection, Littelfuse can provide AECQ compatible fuse 437438 whose fuse and TVSarray are also used for equalized sampling in battery management systems, or TVS diodes for overcurrent protection and overvoltage protection. However, according to Jiang Haofeng, Littelfuse is actively promoting the construction of automotive specification certification standards, and is expected to launch fuse-related automotive specification standards early next year.

In recent years, the application of lithium batteries has become more and more popular. It is expected that sales of new energy vehicles will reach 3.4 million in 2021. In addition, there are more than 300 million two-wheeled electric vehicles on the market, and more than 200 million power tools with an annual output, not to mention electronics such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets. Lithium batteries are basically used for lithium batteries. With the maturity of lithium battery technology, its application fields are becoming more and more extensive, but the accompanying safety issues are becoming more and more prominent.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Management, since 2021, more than 10,000 electric bicycle fires have occurred in BD02AV2 China, resulting in many casualties. In addition, spontaneous combustion or smoke accidents of new energy vehicles often appear in the news. So how to solve the safety problems in the application of new energy technology, so that the cause of the accident has nowhere to hide, and how to prevent it from happening? With this question in mind, we interviewed Mr. Jiang Haofeng, a senior application engineer for products in South China, an expert in circuit protection.

Jiang Haofeng, senior application engineer of lithium battery cited fuse products in South China, believes that there are many reasons for accidents caused by lithium batteries, and it is difficult to determine which link is the cause, but some measures can be taken to reduce or prevent such accidents.

Use more reliable circuit protection devices

The key to lithium batteries is the battery management system. In the battery management system, in addition to precise sampling and precise control of charging and discharging, comprehensive protection of the circuit is also very important. According to Jiang Haofeng, in the protection of battery management systems, Littelfuse can provide AECQ-compliant fuses 437.438.440 series and vehicle-grade TVS diodes; its fuses and TVSarray are also used for balanced sampling in battery management systems, or TVS diodes for overcurrent protection and overvoltage protection.

Speaking of automotive fuses, Jiang Haofeng is very proud to say that since its establishment in 1927, Littelfuse has been in the fuse business and has accumulated very rich experience. In order to better serve automotive customers, we have also established an automotive division as an automotive interior fuse. Of course, they also offer other products in the car. Batteries in pure electric vehicles now require more than 200 fuses, and cars with larger batteries may use more.

He said that the fuse products used in automobiles are more demanding, and there are currently no certification standards for automobile regulations, which may refer to industrial standards in many cases. However, according to Jiang Haofeng, Littelfuse is actively promoting the construction of automotive specification certification standards, and is expected to launch fuse-related automotive specification standards early next year.

Speaking of automotive grade standards, Jiang Haofeng said that automotive products have higher requirements for vibration, service life and temperature, because automotive electronic products have a worse working environment and require more impact resistance and wear resistance. For example, if a fuse is soldered to a circuit board with tin, there may be a risk of falling off after a period of use, if the risk is much lower.

We have collaborated with automakers and upstream companies on nearly 20 automotive tests, hoping to make products better and more suitable for automotive use. In the future, we will develop these tests into a rollout standard. Jiang Haofeng told the Electronic Enthusiasts Network.

He concluded that the use of more stringent circuit and battery protection strategies can greatly reduce the probability of lithium battery failure

In addition to automobiles, there is another popular lithium battery application market this year, that is mobile energy storage. Currently, mobile energy storage devices are mainly manufactured in China and exported overseas. For example, 90% of outdoor power products are exported overseas. This is related to the maturity of the European and American outdoor markets. Europeans and Americans often choose outdoor activities such as traveling, camping, and fishing in their spare time. For example, in the United States, according to the statistics of the outdoorFoundation website, more than 48% of the population in the United States participates in outdoor activities every year, and outdoor power products are very popular in Europe and the United States due to concerns such as large capacity, high power, and safety and portability.

Markets such as Southeast Asia and Africa suffer frequent power outages due to imperfect power infrastructure. It's also convenient to back up outdoor power. Therefore, the mobile energy storage market has huge potential.

Jiang Haofeng said that the domestic market is relatively small, but with the development of the economy and the increase in outdoor activities, it is believed that the demand will also increase in the next few years.

But at the same time, he also has a concern because current mobile energy storage products don't have as much circuit protection as car batteries. In this regard, he is also doing some research, hoping to make mobile energy storage products more secure and reliable. After all, safety is paramount.

In addition to circuit protection, Littelfuse has two major markets.

According to Jiang Haofeng, in addition to circuit protection solutions, Littelfuse has also deployed two other markets, namely technologies and solutions for power devices and sensor products. Among them, after the acquisition of IXYS, Litelfuse has greatly enhanced Litelfuse's strength in power control devices. Taking the application of on-board chargers as an example, Litelfuse can provide products such as power MOSFETs, rectifiers, fast recovery diodes, gate drivers, and thyristors.

In addition, according to him, AED defibrillators are now being deployed in many places, and most of the power devices used inside are provided by Littelfuse.

As for sensor solutions, its line of magnetic sensors includes reed switches, reed sensors, Hall effect sensors and reed relays, as well as bare and packaged magnetic drivers. Littelfuse magnetic sensor solutions are used in many areas of automotive, appliance, industrial control and smart home.

It is reported that in order to improve the core competitiveness of products, Littelfuse has been committed to the globalization strategy of products and promote the construction of production bases with Southeast Asia as the core. In order to better serve local users, the business layout of R&D production bases with technical support in Shanghai, Wuxi, Kunshan, Suzhou, Dongguan and Zhongshan has been formed with three front-end sales centers in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen. Application fields include but not in new energy, consumption, medical, home appliance consumption, security, communications and other fields. It is worth mentioning that the leading companies in the new energy field have a deep cooperative relationship with Litelfuse.
