General Instructions
The BTS3408G is a dual low side switch with D-MOS output stage for driving resistive, capacitive and inductive loads. The design is based on Infineons Smart Power Technology (SPT), which allows bipolar, CMOS and power D-MOS devices to operate on the same monolithic circuit.
The BTS3408RS is protected by embedded protection features and is designed for automotive and industrial applications. It is especially suitable for driving stepper motors and lines.
Circuit Description
logic power
This logic is powered by 4.5 to 60 volts from the VS pin. If VS falls below the maximum 4.5 volts, the logic turns off and the output stage turns off.
direct input
ENA
The ENA/FREEZE input can be used to enable and/or freeze the output control of the IC or to shut down the entire IC.
By pulling the ENA input low, i.e. applying a voltage, the IC is in disable mode. The power stage is turned off and the current consumption is reduced to (stby).
By applying the voltage VENAFZ, the integrated circuit is in freeze mode. The output signal will remain in its original state. All input signals will be ignored.
By pulling the input high, the IC is in enable mode. All input signals are output.
ENA-pin has an internal pull-down.

Each output is independently controlled via its respective input pin. Input pins are active high. Each input signal is output if the common enable pin is high. The input pins have an internal pull-down.
power stage
Each output has embedded protection. In the event of an overload or short circuit to the power supply, the current is limited internally. The current limit is set to ID(lim). If this operation results in excessive temperature, a second protection level (about 165 °C) will put the affected output into PWM mode (selective thermal shutdown on restart) to prevent critical chip temperatures. The temperature lag is typically 10 kilometers.
Zener clamps are used to limit the voltage of the power transistors when the inductive load is turned off.
diagnostic
The general fault pin is an open-drain output. The fault pin is active low. It indicates the fault status of either of the two output stages. By doing so, single-fault and/or double-failure conditions can be monitored. A single fault condition can be specified.
fault distinction
Open load/short-to-ground is recognized in the disconnected state. Overheating due to overload or short-circuit to the battery can only occur in the switched-on state. If there is only one fault at a time, it is possible to distinguish which channel is affected by which fault.
